The following video – posted by a Muslim female named Umm Aqsa, once again shows a male questioning why a female chooses to wear the abaya and the Niqab (face veil). The video highlights how a simple trip for shopping turns into a tirade about the identity and clothing of the Muslim female.

We have said before that anti-Muslim bigotry crosses race and religions. In this instance, the perpetrator is a black male and can be seen in the video. We have also listed the comments of Umm Aqsa underneath the video to highlight her thoughts, but we must also add that she subsequently has received lots of positive messages from the public supporting her and this needs to be highlighted. When we highlight such issues, it is important to remember that there are lots of people who reject such bigotry and lots who believe that Muslims are fellow citizens. This is always important to remember.

I can not believe what I had to endure today. Honestly couldn’t believe it. Thank you to the uncle and brother who came in and had a go at the man.

I was minding my own business so I had to pop into the shop down in Shepherds Bush to grab something. As I entered, this guy who I’ve seen around the area decided to call me ‘ batman’ he even sang the theme tune to his little girls and told them to guess if I’m a man or a women. He told his girls that people like me don’t speak English etc.
I tried to hold it all in but I couldn’t after everything he was saying. I told him he is ignorant and that his kids will be ignorant also if he doesn’t change his way and attitude . He kept going on so i decided to record him and he was aware of this. How ironic he called me ISIS
Please keep in mind his daughters are scared and crying! !

The video below shows an individual openly stating anti-Muslim prejudice and the young female said that it started when she sat in front of the individual. The perpetrator is clearly heard saying that,

“All Muslims are terrorists.”

The comment was made in direct relation to the young Muslim female sitting in front of the perpetrator.

Meet Khadija who was waiting at a coffee shop in the diverse and multi-cultural borough of Haringey. She was waiting for her husband as he was completing his Friday (or Jumu’ah) prayer in the local mosque, last Friday.  Khadija wears a Hijab and as she was peacefully drinking her tea, when she noticed a male staring at her unflinchingly for about 20 minutes.

As she continued to drink her tea, she noticed that the male perpetrator had come close to her and started to take an aggressive posture close to her face and he asked Khadija whether she was “going to blow things up today.”

This was followed by further bigoted and prejudiced comments that Khadija and “her sort” cannot be trusted and that, “all they do is to blow things up.”

As the perpetrator continued, a member of the public asked the perpetrator to sit down and to stop harassing Khadija. However, the threats and anti-Muslim rhetoric continued leading to the police being called and an arrest was subsequently made.

No doubt, Haringey Police and the MET will make a decision on this case, though it is a sobering example that you have the right to report in such bigotry, prejudice and anti-Muslim hatred.

“My name is Shaida Rizvi and I am 16 years old and currently have entered college. I had started practising Islam when I was 15 and had started wearing the Niqab by choice. This started in December 2014 and I made the choice for many reasons. Previously, I had encountered remarks and actions towards me by people, mainly men, and each time I have dismissed them.

However, today after walking down Acacia Avenue, I had been met by a bunch of males in a passing car shouting at me calling me”filth”. Each and every time the traffic lessened and the car came closer towards me, the same words were thrown at me repeatedly.

I’d like to say I was affected very little, but the truth is quite the opposite. However I have told my parents and they have been supporting me.

I will be starting college soon and want to focus just on that and therefore have decided to report this on the back of a suggestion by a sister, which I didn’t want to do at first as I thought it wasn’t serious enough to report, but I trust somehow this may help sisters and brothers in future.

Jazakallah khair my prayers are with you.”

The North West Infidels, an extremist group that has taken aggressive positions towards Muslims and Islam, marched in Manchester yesterday, trying to show the public that they are a greater force than they are. In reality, this small group of mainly football hooligans, many of whom are ageing adrenaline junkies trying to reclaim the days when they would look for a ‘punch-up’ after matches, have become the poster boys for far right extremist groups.

In this video below, however, we are concerned as to the manner in which a potential threat has been dealt with. The statement was made to a Muslim female who was arguing with one of the North West Infidel demonstrators.  The woman in this video asks the individual whether he will repeat something he allegedly said to her and he seems to state that the woman filming the event will be leaving in a ‘body bag.’

We understand that police forces are sometimes issued with orders not to make arrests during demonstrations, if there is a risk that the arrest may lead to further violence. However, there are a number of issues here. The lack of action by the police even to move on the individual means that members of the public looking at this video will be puzzled as to why the individual was allowed to carry on arguing with the female with the camera. Surely some action should be taken against the individual on the basis of a breach of the peace given the context of the situation and the group involved. There also seems to be provocation that is involved in this incident.

We are aware of the person who is in the video and we will be passing this information onto Greater Manchester Police. We will also be looking to find out what action, if any, is taken against the individual in question.

However, we must also add that arguing with far right sympathisers rarely produces any change in their position and sometimes leads to more aggravation. This is an example of why work is needed with young people and we have raised this issue a number of times previously. The key is to ensure that young people understand that anti-Muslim hatred is just the same as other forms of prejudice, hate and intolerance and needs to be tackled.

This is the experience of a young Muslim female who reported into us today.

Khadija (whose name has been changed), was in a play park in Bournemouth on the 6th of August and she was playing with her siblings. She wears the Hijab.

A group of young people in the park saw her and started to wave and laugh at her and they were no more than 13-15 years of age, in her opinion. After about half an hour, they approached Khadija and started to ask her a range of questions in a sarcastic manner. One of the girls stated, “I love your head-dress, where can you get it from, I want one,” as other laughed in the background.

Khadija ignored the young girl who was asking her questions and she decided to sit down. As she did so, the young girl sat next to her and stared at her whilst comments were made by the group of girls in the background. One of the girls rightly commented back to the group and seemed to stand up against their comments that were targeted at the faith of Khadijah. This young girl stated, “you can’t say that, it’s her religion.”

It was at this point that the young girl sitting next to Khadija grabbed her Hijab and pulled it off. She ran off with the Hijab and with the group laughing as they did so.

Khadija has reported in the incident and to the young person who pulled Khadija’s Hijab, what you committed was a crime. If anyone saw the incident, can you contact the police on 101 and ask for Dorset Police. The information will be matched up since the victim has reported this in and the information would have been crime referenced. Information on this can also be sent to us.

Finally, it is clear that a lot of work has to be done in educating and informing young people about anti-Muslim hatred. We will continue to raise this issue with the Department for Education.

We have been informed by a female Muslim victim of an assault that took place against her on Saturday after the Arsenal and Chelsea game in Wembley.

At around 6 pm, a mother was sitting at a bus-stop in Wembley Central. She was wearing the Hijab and some Chelsea fans walked by her and then assaulted her with what she says was an umbrella or a football flag that had been rolled up. She was hit with the item and she stood up shouting as to why she was being assaulted.

The assault stopped and another Chelsea fan responded by swearing at her and he then called her a ‘bomber’. The fans walked off leaving the mother in pain and with her daughters in significant distress since they had viewed their mother in a vulnerable position and having been assaulted and humiliated by Chelsea fans. The impacts of the assault were therefore many-fold, including physical and psychological impacts on the whole family.

The assault was severe enough for the Muslim female to have to take pain-killers.

Such attacks are not rare and we have just documented the following case which was reported a few days ago.

We have passed on details to the police and are working with the victim so that she can get access to justice. We will also be contacting Chelsea for an urgent meeting on this matter so that they can ensure that racism and bigotry are challenged and that they maintain public messages against such behaviour by their fans.

Today we were contacted by a young woman who recently converted to Islam and who has been through a number of issues, not of her own doing, though where she is struggling to be accepted.

A few months ago, this young woman, who has transitioned and who is living her life as a woman, suffered the humiliation of being stopped and searched by law enforcement and felt that the experience was one which affected her identity as a person. A niqab wearer, she has struggled for support and is still coming to terms with her new identities as a woman and as a Muslim.

Today, it seems that she attended a Muslim women’s group for support and the response was one which was difficult and depressing. The support group broke up and she was left feeling that her choices in life and her identities were being rejected.

We know that such issues affect many communities, those of faith and of no faith in the United Kingdom. We understand the difficulties that some people have, though compassion, care and understanding are qualities that can make a real difference to the confidence and the mental health of such people.

This Muslim woman simply is asking to be respected for who she is – a Muslim and a woman. She has asked for nothing more and nothing less. Yet, this case also shows how attacks against the identity of individuals can have real and lasting impacts and effects on the mental health of individuals. Today, she talked about being suicidal and unhappy, yet at this low ebb, she still reached out for support.

Her case and her issues are precisely why we must all make the time to stop and think about how our words, deeds and actions can have life long consequences on people. From the Muslim women who could not work with and get to know and respect a transexual Muslim, through to young males who abuse visible Muslim women, it is imperative that we challenge our stereotypes and our pre-conceptions. In the end, we are all citizens, trying to live our lives together and where all of our lives and futures depend on being safe, respected and treated with dignity.

This is also why intersectionality of identity and being able to work with it matters. This is why we as people are complex, yet we crave acceptance and this is why, without being heard, we all feel that our value in life is minimal. Spare a thought for this young woman and next time that creeping thought comes into your mind, think about how you would want to be treated.
