Meet Steve Uncles, who is the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner candidate for the English Democrats.  One of the leading activists for the English Democrats, his tweets leave little room for doubt, that he has problems about Islam and Muslims.

The English Democrats have absorbed previous supporters of the British National Party and the Party has failed miserably to make any major political headway in the past. Given the comments we have found around Islam and Muslims, the English Democrats certainly are far from the centre political ground.

No doubt, they will remain an irrelevance in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections for Kent.

We thought we would respond to his tweets below.

Editor: Quick question – the way that reads is rather weird and thank you for suggesting that any allegation of rape or grooming will be investigated when reported by Muslim men. We think that what you wanted to say was that any allegation of rape or grooming conducted by ‘Muslim men,’ would be investigated. How charming of you to suggest that rape or grooming is linked to Islam or Muslims, as if their faith drives them to it. This is another case of ‘make it up as you go along.’  In case you were not aware, the vast majority of rape cases statistically involve non-Muslims and we should be talking less about this but rather ensuring that the safety of women is enhanced. We should also be talking about reducing the culture of violence in the minds of some men who think that women are sexual objects. This is about power, rather than faith driving men.

Also, just aside from that, there is the small little matter of the fact that any such complaint is already looked into by the police – you seemed to have missed this out. According to your tweet, it seems that only complaints about Muslims will be investigated. You do realise that you are slowly giving the public the opinion that you are…..not very informed on matters.

Editor: Ban the Burqa Steve – Burqa with a ‘q’. Er, not a major issue the last time we were in Dartford, Kent, we did not see large swathes of women donning the burqa or is this one more element of your bizarre judgements made about Muslims. Judging by previous comments – you might want to rethink this one.

Just when you thought that this could be a very late April fools, sadly, it turns out that it was much worse than that. The group that brought you slogans like ‘Taking Britain Back‘, have managed to wage a campaign that has left many people startled and others stating that change must start at the bottom. It has left some supporters of this far right group aghast since some feel that their desire to join an extremist has been hijacked – by Britain First mounting an anti-Haribo sweets campaign!

Yes, these ‘Templar Knights’, these defenders of Jerusalem, (which we will come to later), have managed to find a problem with Haribo sweets and have picked a fight. In a desire to challenge the ‘Halal’ element of Haribo sweets, Britain First have mounted a campaign to put the ‘G’ back into Haribo Funny Mix sweets, since the removal of gelatine means that practising Muslims can be sure that there is no pork gelatine in the sweets.

So these battalions of righteousness have taken the fight ‘against the evils of Halal’ to the Haribo Funny Mix sweet packets and we will no doubt be trailing their campaign with some interest. You never know, after the Haribo Funny Mix, they might just start on the Refreshers!

However, not to be outdone, the Templar Knights of Peckham have been advertising a Britain First march in Burton that is to take place in October against what they have termed a ‘mega mosque.’ To advertise the mega mosque, the Templar Knights have thought that Burton is in fact, Jerusalem, and have managed to place a picture of the Dome of the Rock mosque on the Al-Haram Al Sharif, as though it were in Burton. Yes, they simply have lost their way again.

Our simple advice to anyone looking to follow or support the work of Britain First would be this. If their idea of social change is attempting to wave a packet of Haribo sweets around or place mosques in Jerusalem in the location of Burton, some 3,000 miles away, do you actually feel confident in their abilities to do anything to ‘Take Britain Back?’ Ladies and gentlemen, we rest our case.

Jewish and Muslim leaders have accused the European Union of “naked discrimination” by ordering the compulsory labelling of all kosher and halal meat.

An advisory group of imams and rabbis at the Office of the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, said it was wrong to single out meat acceptable to some communities while not requiring the identification of conventional methods of slaughter.

MEPs voted overwhelmingly by 559 to 54 in favour of labelling meat from slaughterhouses that do not practise stunning, to inform secular consumers or those concerned with animal welfare how the animal died.

Millions of cows, goats and chickens bleed to death each year in the UK after having their throats slit under Muslim and Jewish slaughter techniques. The practices are exempt from legislation requiring animals to be numbed to pain, but animal welfare groups and the Government’s veterinary experts say they are cruel and should be ended.

The RSCPA supports compulsory labelling because, although religious meat is well identified in kosher and halal butchers, some surplus meat enters the general food chain. The UK has stopped keeping statistics, but Meat Hygiene Service figures from 2004 suggest that 114 million halal animals and 2.1 million kosher animals are killed annually. One Muslim organisation, the Halal Food Authority, insists on stunning, but other halal and almost all kosher slaughterhouses say stunning would violate their interpretation of religious texts.

The imams’ and rabbis’ advisory group and the inter-faith organisation Faith Matters complained that the ruling would not apply to other slaughter methods such as electrocution, which involves stunning.

“Faith leaders have said that these regulations unfairly target kosher and halal products, as conventional stunning methods have a 9 per cent failure rate and may also cause pain to animals,” it said. They added: “We support the concept of fair and universal labelling but believe that such an amendment is naked discrimination. It singles out religious communities who have been careful to undertake humane food preparation for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.”

Labelling is unlikely to come into force for some time because it requires approval from EU member states and a second reading in the European Parliament. Once adopted, large food businesses will have three years to adapt to the rules and smaller operators five years to comply.

Religious slaughter is banned in Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland. The British Veterinary Association says all animals should be stunned before slaughter but, where that does not happen, religiously-slaughtered meat should be labelled to inform shoppers what they are buying.

Last year, the Government’s veterinary advisers, the Farm Animal Welfare Council, said chicken and turkeys were likely to be conscious for up to 20 seconds after an incision across their neck. “Such a large cut will inevitably trigger sensory input to pain centres in the brain,” it said. “Such an injury would result in significant pain and distress before insensibility supervenes.”

Muslim leaders have joined the concern expressed over new EU regulations which mean Kosher and Halal meat will be labelled “meat from slaughter without stunning”.

The European Parliament voted in favour of the amendment to the provision of food information to consumers last month, just two weeks after New Zealand banned the kosher slaughter of animals.

The decision, which only applies to food killed by religious slaughter, was widely condemned by the Jewish community with Henry Grunwald, chairman of Shechita UK, calling it “discriminatory”,

Now, in a joint statement, the rabbis and imams advisory group of the Chief Rabbi’s Office , and the inter-faith organisation, Faith Matters, said: “We support the concept of fair and universal labeling but believe that such an amendment is naked discrimination.

“It singles out religious communities who have been extremely careful to undertake humane food preparation for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.”
