The dead attacker was a 20-year-old Austrian-North Macedonian dual national who had a previous terror conviction.

Two men and two women died from their injuries after the attack on Monday evening, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. The suspected attacker was shot and killed by police.

Vienna’s hospital service said seven people are in life-threatening condition after the attack, the Austrian news agency APA reported. In total, 17 people are being treated in hospital, with gunshot wounds and cuts.

“It is now confirmed that yesterday’s attack was clearly an Islamist terror attack,” Mr Kurz said. “It was an attack out of hatred — hatred for our fundamental values, hatred for our way of life, hatred for our democracy in which all people have equal rights and dignity.”

Interior minister Karl Nehammer later said that the dead assailant, who had roots in the Balkan nation of North Macedonia, had a previous conviction under a law that punishes membership of terrorist organisations.

The attacker, named as Kujtim Fejzulai, was sentenced to 22 months in prison in April 2019 because he had tried to travel to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State group. He was granted early release in December under juvenile law.

Fifteen house searches have taken place and several people have been arrested, Mr Nehammer said, adding that the attacker “was equipped with a fake explosive vest and and an automatic rifle, a handgun and a machete to carry out this repugnant attack on innocent citizens”.

Authorities are still trying to determine whether further attackers are on the run. People in Vienna were urged to stay at home if possible on Tuesday and children did not have to go to school. Some 1,000 police officers were on duty in Vienna on Tuesday morning.

Among those wounded in the attack was a police officer, said Mr Nehammer. The 28-year-old was in hospital but was no longer in a life-threatening condition.

The shooting began shortly after 8pm on Monday near Vienna’s main synagogue as many people were enjoying a last night of open restaurants and bars before a month-long coronavirus lockdown, which started at midnight.

Vienna police chief Gerhard Puerstl said the attacker was killed at 8.09pm.

Mr Kurz said: “We are victims of a despicable terror attack in the federal capital.”

His government on Tuesday ordered three days of official mourning, with flags on public buildings to be flown at half-mast until Thursday.

Unverified footage posted on social media showed a gunman walking through the streets, apparently shooting at people at random, wounding several.

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister said he saw at least one person shoot at people sitting outside at bars in the street below his window near the city’s main synagogue.

“They were shooting at least 100 rounds just outside our building,” he said. “All these bars have tables outside. This evening is the last evening before the lockdown.”

Authorities said residents have uploaded 20,000 videos of the attack to police.

Bary’s son, Abdel-Majed Abdel, was recently arrested in Spain after travelling to Syria to fight for the so-called Islamic State, and posing with the severed head of a soldier in the Assad regime. Abdel was detained with two other men in Almeria and Spanish police subsequently tweeted out that he was “one of Europe’s most wanted Daesh foreign terrorist fighters”.

Bary’s imminent release and return means that he cannot be placed under Terrorist Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIMs) and he is being released on compassionate grounds, given that he is 60 years of age, suffers from asthma and is overweight.

Bary sought and was granted asylum in 1990 after he claimed that he was tortured by the Mubarak regime at the time. Faith Matters has long stated that the root of the Islamist extremist problem that has blighted our nation came about because there was little understanding of Islamist extremist activists, groups and networks in the late 1980’s and 1990’s. This meant that many Islamist extremist leaders who were being persecuted by regimes such as those of Mubarak and Gaddafi, entered into the U.K. They entered like wolves into a sheep pen, further poisoning the minds of many young men and turning them against their own country.

Such individuals have fanned the flames of extremism in our country and internationally and whilst Bary has served his sentence in the US, we must ensure that his activities are monitored once he enters the U.K.

However, public patience with individuals convicted of terrorist related offences is running out and many will be asking why we cannot push the US to ensure that he serves out his full sentence. Sadly, the reality is that such an argument will go nowhere as US law authorities have deemed him eligible for release.

It therefore falls upon the Home Secretary to demonstrate the measures that the Home Office will put in place for Bary and future releases like his. Whilst he may have served out the majority of his 25 year sentence, there is no way that this former spokesperson for the one time most wanted terrorist in the world, can lead a life without observation from our security services. It is people like Bary who created the monster of Islamist extremism. That stain remains with them forever, even when they look like a grandad with little desire to harm anyone.

In recent years, at least 24 people have been tracked by the PA news agency living close to the neighbourhood in Fallowfield the Abedis called home.

They have included at least two other suicide bombers, a leading IS recruiter and twin “poster girls” for the jihadi cause.

Before that, al Qaida commander Anas al-Libi lived in south Manchester.

Salman Abedi, born, raised and educated in the city, left school with few qualifications, had poor English and his only educational achievements were studying Arabic.

He joined the same violent few from an area centred around Moss Side and Whalley Range that has seen a now well-worn path to radicalisation.

Abedi’s own family came to the UK in 1992 from Libya, among the 430% increase since 1991 in people of African origin living in Manchester, according to figures from the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity at Manchester University.

On the first anniversary of the Manchester Arena bombing, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Chief Constable Ian Hopkins maintained radicalisation was a national problem, not one specific to Manchester.

He told PA that people being drawn into extremism was a problem the whole of the UK must face.

Just 18 months before the bombing, a report titled Rethinking Radicalisation was commissioned by Manchester City Council to “assess the current state of community relations and radicalisation in Manchester”.

It noted widespread criticism of the Government’s deradicalisation programme titled Prevent.

Another persistent theme in the report was the issue of radicalisation, which was “undeniable” in Manchester, according to some youngsters cited by the report, with particular concern over extremism among teenagers and young adults.

The report also spoke of “parallel communities” living side by side but barely integrating.

After the arena bombing, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham commissioned a report, A Shared Future, on tackling extremism and promoting social cohesion.

It concluded radicalisation had no single driver with no single solution and repeated the fears of persecution amongst Muslims of the Prevent counter-terrorism strategy.

It also noted a 130% increase in hate crimes and 500% increase in anti-Muslim hate crime in the weeks following the bombing.

In October last year, Manchester’s myriad of counter-extremism initiatives and projects were joined in the city by Coin, the Cohesion and Integration Network, a new national charity to strengthen good community relations.

In the same month, GCHQ, an intelligence and security organisation working with MI5 and MI6, also announced it would open offices in the city.

At the Old Bailey trial of Hashem Abedi, one witness from the Midlands described how the defendant asked him to buy acid, which can be used to manufacture explosives.

He was warned not to do it.

When he asked why, his father told him because Hashem was “from Manchester”.

Police issued a wanted poster for Cherif Chekatt, the main suspect in the attack, who was on an watchlist as a potential security threat. Authorities say the 29-year-old was known to have developed radical religious views while in jail.

France has raised its security threat to the highest level in response to Tuesday evening’s shooting rampage, which Strasbourg’s mayor said was indisputably an act of terrorism.

Two people were killed and a third victim who was hospitalised has now died, the Paris Prosecutor’s office said. A fourth victim has been declared brain-dead. At least 12 people were wounded, several of them critically.

More than 700 police were taking part in the second day of the manhunt in Strasbourg, which lies on the west bank of the Rhine river, and the surrounding region.

Armed French and German police manned controls on either side of the Europe Bridge, which spans the frontier. Traffic on the French side was heavily backed up as officers inspected vehicles during the morning rush-hour.

Police in the German town of Kehl, on the opposite riverbank, said they had received several reports of possible sightings on Wednesday but all were false leads.

Asked if French police had been instructed to catch Chekatt dead or alive, government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux told CNews: “It doesn’t matter. The best thing would be to find him as quickly as possible.”

It took police four months to track down Salah Abdesalam, the prime surviving suspect from the November 2015 militant assault on Paris, in an apartment in Brussels. One hundred and thirty people were killed in that attack as well as seven gunmen and bombers.

RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM

The Christmas market, a hugely popular attraction in the historic city, remained closed on Thursday.

Witnesses told investigators that the suspect Chekatt cried out “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greater) as he opened fire on the market, a target Paris Prosecutor Remy Heitz suggested may have been chosen for its religious symbolism.

Chekatt’s police file photo shows a bearded man of North African descent, with a prayer bruise on the centre of his forehead. He has 27 criminal convictions for theft and violence, and has spent time in French, German and Swiss jails.

Neighbours on the housing estate where Chekatt family’s lived described the suspect as a typical young man who dressed in jogging pants and trainers rather than traditional Islamic robes.

“He was a little gangster, but I didn’t see any signs of him being radicalized,” said one local association leader who declined to be named, standing outside Chekkat’s apartment building.

The attack took place at a testing time for President Emmanuel Macron, who on Monday announced tax concessions to quell a month-long public revolt over living costs that spurred the worst unrest in central Paris since the 1968 student riots.

Griveaux said a decision had yet to be taken on whether to ban another planned “yellow vest” protest in Paris. The last three consecutive Saturdays of riots in the capital have seen cars torched, shops looted and the Arc de Triomphe defaced.

“We’re simply saying at this stage that, given the events that are unfolding after the terrorist attack in Strasbourg, it would be preferable if everyone could go about a Saturday before the festive holidays in a quiet way,” Griveaux said.

Ali Charrihi was one of those enjoying the festivities with his family.

But their night out came to a sharp end when his mother Fatima was struck down- she was one of the first to die on the Promenade des Anglais.

“Our family is still in pain, still in limbo, since July 14. We’re slowly trying to climb back up, we’re drawing strength from our children, from the struggle for life that we’re having right now, against radicalisation and the rest of these phenomena which pollute our lives.”

The attack was carried out by Tunisian-born Frenchman Mohamed Bouhlel and claimed by Islamic State.

This Muslim family, originally from Morocco, say they experienced anti-islamic sentiment as horror descended on their city.

“On the first night, there was a woman who came while my mother was still on the ground, with all the blood, the ambulances and all of it, she stopped and she said, ‘Band of terrorists, well done, you. It’s your turn.’ And then while my sister and I were trying to mourn together, it was the first time I went to the site, there was this man who said, ‘We no longer want this here, we no longer want you here.’ And ten minutes later, a man in front of a cafe said to us, ‘That’s well and good, you’re going around in a pack.’ And when we said, ‘Leave us alone, we just lost our mother,’ he said, ‘All the better, that makes one less of you’.”

Determined to prevent extremism, the Charrihi siblings have founded an association reaching out to people vulnerable to radicalisation.

The family are pinning their hopes on new President Emmanuel Macron to find solutions to extremism.

Many lives, families and communities deeply affected by the actions of Islamist terrorists who have tried to attack the peace of our country. The list sadly continues on as 6 are reported to have been murdered last night by what looks like another Islamist terrorist attack.

It is clear that Islamic State has influenced some of the actions of terrorists through calls to disrupt and harm people and communities by the use of vehicles and knives. This fits into the modus operandi of the terrorists that attacked London yesterday.

At this time, we ask that people reflect and think about those who have died and who have been injured. There will be lost of commentary in the coming days about extremism and terrorism, though at this time, we need to remember the many who have been murdered on our streets because of such attacks.

London will remain strong and resilient. This does not mean that we are weak or complacent as a City. What it means is that it redoubles our joint efforts to tackle the extremist rhetoric that fuels terrorism, as well as working closely with law enforcement agencies.
