The 15-year-old boy, from Northumberland, is charged with engaging in conduct in preparation for committing acts of terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

It is alleged he began to discuss planning a terrorist attack with an unidentified individual earlier this year.

He acquired equipment and weapons including a crossbow that were purchased online in 2024 and had downloaded extremist manuals, it is claimed.

Among items allegedly found at his home were nails tied together with duct tape, a life-size skeleton covered in body armour, and Nazi memorabilia.

The boy is also charged with one count of membership of a proscribed organisation, contrary to Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The Base, an extreme right-wing white supremacist group, was proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the Home Office in July 2021.

The teenager was arrested as part of a pre-planned, intelligence-led operation on Thursday February 20.

On Friday, he appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing before Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb.

He spoke to confirm his identity by video-link from HMP Wetherby in West Yorkshire.

Prosecutor Birgitte Hagem told the court the charges relate to alleged plans to attack local synagogues and a phone mast.

A provisional trial was set for January 13 at Leeds Crown Court, with a plea hearing on July 18 this year at the Old Bailey.

The defendant, who cannot be identified because of his age, was remanded back into custody.

The regulator opened the probe into Brighton Mosque and Muslim Community Centre, locally known as Dyke Road Mosque, in August 2022 over concerns of failures to resolve an undisclosed dispute that was found to have damaged the charity’s management.

The row came after former trustee Abubaker Deghayes was convicted for encouraging violent jihad in a speech to around 50 people including children at the mosque on November 1 2020.

At least one trustee was also present at the speech after evening prayers, the Charity Commission said, who did not intervene or attempt to minimise the impact of the content of Deghayes’s actions.

Deghayes, of Saldean, East Sussex, was jailed for four years at the Old Bailey in April 2022.

In inquiry findings published on Wednesday, it concluded the charity was “poorly managed” and there was “misconduct and/or mismanagement in the administration of it”.

The regulator added: “The Commission’s intervention and the appointment of the interim manager were necessary to restore proper governance and administration to the charity.

“A new board of trustees have been appointed to run the charity, which the interim manager identified after a full and thorough recruitment exercise.”

The interim manager took control of the charity’s finances, including cash donations of more than £17,000.

The inquiry also disqualified former trustee Karim Aboutayab on July 10 last year, for four years and six months after finding he had a “greater culpability” for the mismanagement discovered in the charity’s affairs.

This included using an “inflammatory” tone towards others which contributed to the dispute’s escalation, and failing to file the charity’s annual accounts on time.

The Charity Commission first assessed concerns at the charity after Deghayes was charged for encouraging terrorism in July 2021, and

later issued an official warning after deciding then-trustees knew or should have known about the risk he posed, in May 2022.

Head of inspections at the regulator Joshua Farbridge said: “Abusing a charity to encourage terrorism is a grave breach of public trust and we expect all trustees to take steps to ensure their charities cannot become safe havens for terrorist or extremist views.

“While the earlier criminal conviction was outside the scope of our inquiry, what occurred at Brighton Mosque and Muslim Community Centre demonstrates how serious disputes within a charity can not only severely impact its running and reputation, but leave a charity unprotected from the risk of exploitation by those with malign intentions.”

Brighton Mosque and Muslim Community Centre has been contacted for comment.

Jordan Richardson, 20, appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday charged with engaging in conduct in preparation of an act of terrorism between August 1 and December 19 last year.

It is alleged he acquired weapons, researched explosive substances, identified possible locations and considered steps needed to carry out an attack.

Richardson spoke to confirm his identity when he appeared in court by video-link from Doncaster prison.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb set a plea hearing before her at the Old Bailey on May 2.

She ordered a provisional trial at Leeds Crown Court from October 7 and remanded Richardson into custody.

The defendant, of Oliver Close, Howden, near Goole, East Yorkshire, was arrested on December 19 after he allegedly made Instagram posts expressing his support for Islamic State.

On arrest, it is alleged he was found with a document that is said to have set out an attack plan, referring to weapons and killing bystanders.

He also had a handwritten recipe for sulphur mustard – a toxic “blister agent”, it is claimed.

A crossbow, crossbow bolts and a combat-style knife were allegedly found at his home.

Searches of digital devices allegedly showed he had expressed a desire to kill or harm infidels and members of the Jewish population.

Research of potential targets included a shopping centre, a court has previously heard.

A former British soldier who sent night vision and thermal imaging rifle scopes to support terrorist activity by the Taliban in Afghanistan has been jailed.

Muhammad Choudhary, 41, sent the items to Pakistan on a number of occasions in 2017 and 2018.

He bought 12 thermal imaging rifle scopes from legitimate specialist UK suppliers at a total cost of £31,500, the Old Bailey heard.

He was caught after a joint investigation by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and later admitted they were intended for use by the Taliban, which, at the time, launched various attacks against the then-Government and coalition forces in Afghanistan, the forces said.

On Tuesday, Choudhary, who had pleaded guilty to terrorism funding and fundraising offences, was sentenced to a total of seven years’ imprisonment, with an additional year to be served on an extended licence.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC, during sentencing, said: “From all the evidence, it is clear you knew the money you sent and the thermal imaging rifle scopes you acquired and sent, or tried to send, were intended to be used for the purposes of terrorism, namely by the Taliban in Afghanistan in its conflict with the Afghan government and coalition forces.

“You exported, or tried to export, rifle scopes knowing that you were prohibited from doing so and the contents of the packages containing the scopes were misdescribed no doubt in order to increase the likelihood of their export.

“As a former British soldier, whilst your service in the military was primarily to be engaged in medical duties, you would have been well aware of the capabilities of the scopes and how they were to be deployed.”

Thermal imaging systems help identify objects that emit infrared radiation such as humans while night vision imaging systems help users to see things in low light level conditions.

These systems, which are used by the military to detect targets and aim weapons, can be used as rifle sights by snipers to find and shoot targets both night and day.

The judge said Choudhary had made contact with the overseas organisations by December 2016 and had offered to help them with some money plus small or large weapons from that time.

In January, Choudhary pleaded guilty to a charge of fundraising for the purposes of terrorism, and two charges of making funding arrangements for the purposes of terrorism.

He first came to the attention of HMRC after a seizure of rifle scopes at Heathrow Airport in January 2018 when he was linked to a consignment, which was intended for an address in Pakistan.

Investigators found that Choudhary had bought the sniper sights from legitimate hunting suppliers. He later admitted to HMRC investigators to being in touch with individuals in Pakistan and Afghanistan and that he knew the scopes were for use by Taliban fighters.

Choudhary was then investigated by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and charged in September 2023.

After sentencing, Acting Commander Gareth Rees, of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, described it as “a unique case where Government colleagues identified potential terrorist-related activity and shared information with us”.

He said: “This case is a prime example of how terrorist activity can take many different forms, and shows that we will investigate anyone in the UK who supports terrorist activity, regardless of what it may be in support of or to where it may be linked.”

Mike Pass, assistant director of the fraud investigation service at HMRC, said: “The UK operates a strict licensing regime to uphold international sanctions and to ensure military equipment does not fall into the wrong hands.

“We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure effective controls and enforcement on military goods, which contributes to the UK’s national security.”

The police said Choudhary was also previously charged with 23 offences under the Customs and Excise Management Act (1979). He pleaded not guilty to these offences at a hearing in February, and it was subsequently agreed for these offences to lay on file.

Robert Talland, 53, his daughter, Rosie Talland, 31, and son, Stephen Talland, 33, were charged following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

The case centres on the defendants’ alleged activities in the neo-Nazi music scene in the UK and the record label Rampage Productions.

Stephen and Rosie Talland allegedly performed in a band called Embers Of An Empire associated with the music network.

All three defendants are charged with conspiracy to incite racial hatred between January 1 2019 and October 10 2020.

The charge alleges they conspired to distribute a recording of a track by Embers Of An Empire.

The second charge alleges that Stephen Talland, from Harlow in Essex, and Rosie Talland, with others unknown, incited racial hatred on October 21 2021 by performing songs at a club in Leeds.

The third charge alleges Robert Talland possessed racially inflammatory material in the form of sound recordings “with a view to it being distributed by himself or another” to stir up racial hatred.

Robert Talland, from Waltham Abbey in Essex, faces two further charges of disseminating a terrorist publication.

On Friday, the defendants appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing before Mr Justice Sweeney.

The senior judge set a timetable for the case with a plea hearing on March 25 and a provisional trial from October 23 at Woolwich Crown Court.

The defendants, who spoke only to confirm their identities, were granted continued conditional bail.

Brusthom Ziamani, 25, was jailed for 22 years after he was caught with a hammer and knife en route to behead a soldier in 2014.

While being held at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire, Ziamani befriended radicalised Baz Hockton, 26, and the pair hatched a terror attack behind bars, the Old Bailey heard.

They made makeshift bladed weapons and fake suicide belts to launch a ferocious attack on officer Neil Trundle on January 9.

Two female staff members were hurt as they tried to stop the assault, with left Mr Trundle covered in blood.

Ziamani, originally from Camberwell, south London, had denied attempted murder and an alternative of wounding with intent, but admitted assaulting the two women.

He claimed he wanted to be transferred because Whitemoor had become hostile to Muslims in the wake of former inmate Usman Khan’s attack at Fishmonger Hall.

Hockton, originally from Dagenham, who declined to give evidence, had denied attempted murder but admitted wounding with intent.

An Old Bailey jury deliberated for three hours and nine minutes to find them both guilty of attempted murder.

The court had heard the defendants had lured “kind and helpful” Mr Trundle to a store cupboard on the pretext of asking for a spoon.

They then set upon the officer, targeting his vulnerable head, upper chest and neck areas shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ziamani briefly broke off to punch nurse Jayle Cowles and prison officer Georgina Ibbotson before resuming the onslaught on Mr Trundle.

When another officer approached, Ziamani opened his jacket to expose the fake suicide belt, and said: “I’ve got a bomb.”

Meanwhile, Hockton was seen on graphic CCTV footage to charge at another officer before both inmates were restrained.

An examination of the fake suicide belts revealed one had been constructed with a battery and pressurised can and the other was made from boxer short elastic, electrical cable and plastic bottles.

Mr Trundle was left covered in blood, with blood on the walls around him, having suffered cuts to his scalp, arm and shoulder.

Reliving the attack, Mr Trundle, who has 14 years’ prisons experience, said: “Before I knew it I was on the floor on my back.

“I did not see any weapons. I could feel blows coming down on me.

“I did not realise how bad the damage was to myself until I went to the hospital and looked in the mirror.”

Mr Trundle denied there was any anti-Muslim feeling at Whitemoor over the deaths of two Cambridge students at Fishmonger Hall.

He said staff had been advised on appropriate behaviour after he heard the term “raghead” used to describe Muslims once.

Prosecutor Annabel Darlow QC had told jurors the attack was terrorist-related.

Ziamani’s plan to become a “martyr” was spelled out in handwritten notes.

In a note found in a cell search, Hockton had written: “Can’t stand anything in uniform and if I see a cop on the wing I’m stick a spike in his head like a unicorn.” (sic)

Ms Darlow told jurors Ziamani’s previous conviction demonstrated he had wanted to kill a British officer for “terrorist purposes”.

She said: “The prosecution say this is exactly what happened in the case, albeit transplanted from the outside world where Mr Ziamani had greater access to weapons and targets to the more limited confines of the prison environment.”

Giving evidence, Ziamani denied it was a terror attack, saying he only wanted to inflict some damage, like a bloody nose, to get sent to a different prison.

The two men did not react as the jury’s verdict was read out, but could be seen smiling as they were sent to the cells.

The judge, Mrs Justice May, listed the case for sentence at 2pm on Thursday.

Following the verdicts, Mr Trundle said: “I thank those colleagues of mine who risked their lives coming to my aid on that terrible day. If it was not for their bravery and instant response, I am convinced I would not be here today.”

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “This was a calculated and horrific attack by two prisoners who had one aim – to try and murder prison staff.

“I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding professionalism and bravery of the courageous prison staff who responded to the incident. Their quick and selfless actions saved the life of their colleague that day. My thoughts are also with the other victims of this attack who also were injured during this incident.”

A Prison Service spokesperson added: “We welcome today’s verdicts and pay tribute to Prison Officer Trundle and all the staff that responded to this incident with such courage and dedication.

“Attacks on our hardworking staff are not be tolerated and we will always push for the strongest punishment.”

Police seized two laptops, a mobile phone and a USB memory stick after searching the home of Abdirahman Mohamed in Middlesex in July 2017.

Officers found electronic copies of the IS magazine as well as other documents including “safety and security guidelines for Lone Wolf Mujahideen”, the court heard.

Following an Old Bailey trial, the unemployed 42-year-old was found guilty of eight charges of possessing a document or record for terrorist purposes and cleared of one count of disseminating a terrorist publication.

Prosecutor Kelly Brocklehurst had said: “It is not the Crown’s case that the defendant personally engaged in, or was about to engage in, violence to kill or maim people in a political, ideological or religious cause.

“Rather the Crown say he knowingly possessed a number of documents that the Crown say are the kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Mr Brocklehurst told the jury that Mohamed, of Shadwell Drive, Northolt, London, had a series of articles named “just terror tactics”.

These focused on vehicle attacks, knife attacks and hostage taking, and talked about causing “as much carnage and terror as possible” and leaving behind a “trail of carnage”.

Mr Brocklehurst said: “The contents of the magazines in particular provide worrying articles with useful tips and guidance on how those who are maybe contemplating carrying out a terrorist attack could achieve their aim.”

The jury was told Mohamed would exchange messages with people while visiting chat rooms under the name Concerned Muslim.

Mr Brocklehurst said Mohamed gave no comment when interviewed by police but provided a prepared written statement which said: “I am a Somali Muslim, my community had been affected by terrorism.

“The document was to help me understand the issues involved and for my own general interest and for me to form a view on what is happening.”

Mohamed was given continued bail until his sentencing on April 18.

Salim Wakil, 25, from Fleet, Hampshire, arranged the transfer of 3,000 dollars via Western Union for his sister Sumaiyyah in February last year, the Old Bailey heard.

Prosecutor Brett Weaver said: “The arrangement was made despite repeated warning from the police that any such transfer of funds to Syria could lead to him committing a criminal offence.”

He used a friend’s name in the transaction in a “deliberate attempt by the defendant to conceal his actions, demonstrating he knew perfectly well what he was doing was wrong”, the prosecutor said.

The defendant claimed he only sent the funds to help his younger sibling to return to family in Britain, even though she had married and given birth to a daughter in Raqqa, the court was told.

Wakil had lived with his parents and nine younger siblings at the family home in Fleet, including Sumaiyyah, who is now 21, the court heard.

In August 2014, aged just 16, Sumaiyyah left home and travelled to Syria, leaving behind a letter explaining her reasons for joining IS and asking her family not to tell police.

Police did not find out until the following year and the Prevent deradicalisation programme was called in.

An investigation revealed the teenager had maintained contact with her family via Skype calls and WhatsApp as well as other text communications.

During the chats, Sumaiyyah described wanting to become a martyr and talked of her husband and pregnancy, jurors heard.

While in Syria, she had married 19-year-old Abu Dujana – real name Mehdi Hassan – from Portsmouth who was killed fighting in the autumn of 2014. But Wakil repeatedly encouraged his sister to come back to Britain.

When she asked to see photographs of her younger siblings, Wakil replied: “U come see them thanks.” Wakil denied entering into a funding arrangement but was found guilty by the Old Bailey jury.

Judge Rebecca Poulet QC said she had “no doubt this defendant was naive” and was not supportive of IS himself. She said he “foolishly and wrongly” took the risk of sending money because he was “genuinely feeling concerned for the safety of his sister”.

The judge asked for a pre-sentence report and adjourned sentencing until February 8. She told the defendant: “You are now convicted of this offence on very clear evidence.

“You must understand that in putting this matter back for a pre-sentence report to find out more about you and your present situation that is in no sense a promise or suggestion that you will not immediately go back to prison.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, head of Counter Terrorism Policing South East, said: “Salim Wakil was manipulated by his sister into sending money to her, which could very easily be used for terrorism purposes.

“The law intends to cut off funding to terrorist groups and to stop money falling into the hands of people who may use it for terrorist purposes.

“By making the decision to send money and ignoring the advice of the police, Salim Wakil broke the law.

“The law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their motives, and is here to stop the funding of terrorist organisations and individuals.

“No-one has the permission to take the law into their own hands, no matter how emotional the reasoning is for doing so.”

Choudary had been convicted previously by a jury at London’s Old Bailey court of using online lectures and messages to encourage support for the banned group which controls large areas of Syria and Iraq.

Notorious in Britain where the tabloids denounce him as a hate preacher, he is also well-known abroad, making regular TV appearances in the wake of attacks by Islamist militants to blame Western foreign policy for targeting Muslims.

Prosecutors said that in postings on social media, Choudary had pledged allegiance to the “caliphate” declared by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and said Muslims had a duty to obey or provide support to him.

Choudary had denied the terrorism charges and claimed the case was politically motivated. He was found guilty after trial in July.

The former head of the now banned organization al-Muhajiroun, Choudary became infamous for praising the men responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the United States and saying he wanted to convert Buckingham Palace into a mosque.

Despite his often controversial comments and refusal to condemn attacks by Islamists such as the 2005 bombings on the London transport system, Choudary has always denied any involvement in militant activity and had never been previously charged with any terrorism offence.
