President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban on refugee resettlement will worsen the agonies of refugees, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press briefing at the UN headquarters, Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for Guterres, said refugees are ordinary people forced to flee war, violence and persecution in their home countries, and are in urgent need of life-saving assistance and protection.

“Commenting the executive order, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi said that the imperative remains to provide protection for people fleeing deadly violence, and we are concerned that this decision, though temporary, may compound the anguish for those it affects,” said Haq.

The head of the UN refugee agency values the crucial role the U.S. has played in refugee resettlement and is ready to engage constructively with the U.S. administration to ensure all refugee programs meet the high standard for safety and security, he added.

On Monday, Trump signed the new executive order that temporarily halts people from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S., namely Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Somalia and Libya. The order also keeps in place Trump’s plan to reduce the number of refugees to be allowed into the U.S. this budget year to 50,000.
